Fiftieth Anniversary of ISKCON’s first public Harinama procession

On 14th August 1966, Srila Prabhupada marched with a few devotees from 26 Second Avenue to Washington Square Park singing the Hare Krishna mantra in public for the first time. At Washington Square Park, he led the singing of the Hare Krishna mantra in public for many hours as devotees danced and invited members of the public to join them. This is a momentous milestone of the Hare Krishna movement: it was the first time that the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra inaugurated by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabu over 500 years ago, stepped outside the shores of India. The fiftieth anniversary of this event falls on Sunday, 14th August 2016. We request devotees around the world to organise a maha-harinama procession in their local cities in the following manner:

  1. Organise a maha-harinama procession that culminates in a local park
  2. Get advance permission from your local authorities to plant a commemorative tree at the park
  3. Invite a local politician like the City Mayor to plant the tree
  4. Unveil a plaque that says: “This tree has been planted by <Name of VVIP> on <date> to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, known popularly as the Hare Krishna movement.”
  5. Have a few speeches about the Fiftieth Anniversary and achievements of ISKCON
  6. Distribute prasadam or snacks to everyone
  7. Make sure you invite the local media (especially the picture desks at every newspaper) to this event. Try to get a photo with a caption on the front page of every paper, as this is more of a photo story than a news story

For example, you can organise 50 Harinama processions, 50 house programmes, 50 Bhagavad-gita yajnas, 50 student preaching programmes, 50 screenings of the Joy of Devotion film etc. Many temples have already taken a pledge to organise such events. You can read about them on our website at www.iskcon50.org or on www.iskconnews.org
  3. Host a big youth festival that can bring thousands of young people together for a remarkable spiritual experience. You can read more about youth festivals already organised on our website or on ISKCON News
